T3D Nimslo aperture design

The Reel 3d Nimslo book states that the Burdlo full frame conversion
vignettes increasingly at small apertures for technical reasons.

The technical reason could be either lens coverage, or it could be the
aperture design (a vertical diamond shape to fit the vertical format).

Does anyone know what the technical reason is for the increasing
vignetting? If it's the vertical diamond aperture shape, I wonder if
converting it to a horiz. diamond with the same area would decrease
vignetting (since you have to cut new shutter blades anyway).
