T3D RE: acuity enhanced with binocular vision

In TECH-3D Digest 271 Peter Abrahams <telscope@xxxxxxxxxx> discussed
enhancement to acuity with
binocularity. The increased acuity results sound plausible -- even if
just for probability considerations. If a signal is hard to detect, having
two receivers enhances reception just by probability.

Also, for stereo in general, note that there are at least four conditions
--
one eye alone looking at a 2-D image, both eyes looking at a 2-D image,
both eyes looking at identical 2-D image (biocular), and both eyes looking
at 3-D image. With both eyes looking at 2-D image (photograph, painting),
your
stereo system tells you the image is flat, contradicting the shading
and perspective, etc. cues to depth. If you look with one
eye at paintings, etc., or better yet with a special optical device that
splits one
image into two and presents the identical image to both eyes, the depth of
the
2-D image is greatly enhanced, compared to normal binocular viewing with
both eyes
of the 2-D image. However, 3-D stereo images viewed with both eyes are
still the
best approximation to real life.
