Also, small-area contrast is horribly difficult to measure, due to issues
such as veiling glare and lens flare. I've seen papers that cite characters
on a screen as an example of worst-case scenarios for contrast measurement.
Some possible approaches to improved small-area contrast measurement have
only been published in the last year or so.
Still, the basic findings of the experiment should be valid.
