A year or two back, Sam and John B had a
discussion about whether MF was any better
for macro than 35mm. I tuned most of it out
(wasn't too interested at the time) but I
seem to recall that there is one issue.
Lifesize on 35mm means that a 24x36mm
bug will fill the frame. Lifesize in MF
means that you need a 55x55mm bug to fill
the frame. Thus if you want to fill the
MF frame with the original 24x36mm insect
you need to go above lifesize (1.5:1 or 2:1)
to do that, with the resulting problems
from reduced DOF at more magnification.
So in some ways it depends on the size
of the object you wish to photograph.
Maybe John B or Sam can refresh us on
what the overall result of the discussion
was.
