About an hour after I sent that, I just _knew_ someone would call me
on it. Loose talk always gets me in trouble. I should have guessed
the call would be from Eric G. 8-)

What I was trying to say is that with uncoated lenses you get some
defocussed light bouncing around in the film chamber. That light
is white light since the average of what enters the pupil is white
and the average is what you get if the light is defocussed. When
you add white light to a color, you are by definition desaturating
that color. This is sort of like loss of contrast but is not precisely
the same thing. Loss of contrast means that the ratio of the amount of
light coming from a light area of the image as compared to what comes
from a dark area is not up to snuff. In this case, by adding light to
all of the areas, you do cause a loss of contrast but that was not what
the question was, was it? 8-)
