Last I knew this was called "image advertising".  It isn't intended to
sell product per se, but to promote the name of the company as being
generally kewl and hi-tech.  The name recognition is then supposed to
spill over into all their more mundane product lines (like incandescent
lightbulbs), through osmosis (one supposis).
