Open Explorer, browse to the location of the program, right
click on the program, select "properties" from the menu, go
to the "program" tab, uncheck "close when finished," then run
the program.  The DOS window will then remain on screen with
whatever error message with which the program is terminating.
Use Alt-F4 or click the "X" in the upper right corner to close
the window when done reading the message.

The above is done from memory, but I think I have it mostly
correct.  (I refuse to downgrade from Win 3.1 to Win '95 on
my personal PC, so I can't double check the steps at the
moment.)
