  Videophiles who get their TV calibrated (for color
temp and greyscale linearity) sometimes do this.
They illuminate the wall behind the TV with a
light of the correct color temp and brightness.

  But then, no one sits at the ortho distance
from a regular (non-HDTV) television set. The
scan lines would be much too visible. By ortho
I mean sitting a distance equal to the screen
diagonal away (mis-use of term I agree).

  For TV watching I to like some illumination
in the room otherwise the screen seems to
bright. But my MF viewer fills my field of view
more completely so it doesn't seem too bright
with black around it. YMMV.
