Yes: Sir Isaac. Physics aside, he is famous for having sat in
Parliament for years and making only one recorded statement--a request
that a window be opened to let in some air. His volubility, it seems,
was confined to science, where he was truly multidisciplinary (if
that's a word). Only his contemporary and antagonist, Wolfgang von
Goethe, can be compared in breadth of grasp. And in science, Newton
performed [Newton] rings around Goethe, whose Farbenlehre strikes me
as the most outrageously bad "great book" in history. If Geothe was
right that Newton was wrong, modern color TV wouldn't work, modern
color printing wouldn't work, and (more to the present point) modern
color photography wouldn't work. (Pace, any Waldorf/Steiner School
devotees present.)
