Further comment to HIE as slides.
I want to answer some questions that came up after my inquiry about using the
TETENAL reversal kit or other methods to make b&w slides with Kodak HIE:
1. Using reversal kits seems in general to increase the sensitivity a film
since they have to produce higher contrast. But there are differences between
different films :
Kodak TMAX films do not seem to change their sensitivity a lot
Agfa films have an increase in their sensitivity by a factor 2-4
Kodak HIE seems to have an increase by a factor of at least 8 ! and also even
after a short processing time the contrast seems to be rather high.
I have not tried any other films so far but I think I get the best results with
Kodak TMAX 100 at 100 ASA and AGFAPAN 100 at 200 ASA.
Getting the right exposure with KODAK HIE is very critical and I had to bracket
a lot to get nice slides.
2. Thank you very much for your information about the Rollei IR-filter. It is
possible to look through it, but it is very dark. Of course nobody should look
directly in the sun through an IR-filter. The person could end up with a severe
eye damage. But I think just looking at a bright scene should be ok. Anyway
thank you very much for the warning and I think it was a good idea to put that
warning as a topic on the list.
Alex Grossmann.
