I too thought Yellow Father was being a bit conservative in their "total 
darkness" routine. Last fall, up in a ghost town building above 
Silverton, Colorado, I decided to change film without the changing bag. 
I was inside the building, quite dim. I have an N90s which is very easy 
to change quickly. I had the cassette outside for perhaps 4 or 5 
seconds. Unhappily, when I developed that roll, the first 7 or 8 frames 
were ruined. That is only time I tried this and now always use the 
changing bag. It is a hassle but I am afraid it is necessary.
