I still wonder how people can call this color black. Take a look 
outside (bright sunlight recommended!) and be amazed about the 
difference between indoors and outdoors. I am pretty sure not all of 
this difference can be contributed to the general difference in 
light; I believe the relative amount of 'red' is much much higher 
outdoors, including IR.
BTW, even Kodak lists #89B as visually opaque. 

(PS Ken/Jim: I love your description 'hominid invisible'....maybe
there is an appropriate latin word for invisible as well....only if
it is as catchy as 'hominid' of course....;-))

As for focusing: I agree that it is not the easiest thing, but
that's where AF cameras shine....they are able to focus even through
87C filters!....but in that case your problem of composition remains....:-))
However, with #89B, composition shouldn't be a problem IMHO.

Perhaps I am spoiled by looking through the 88A, but I wouldn't call 
#89B anything more than dark red.
