Some years ago, when Modern Photography did a piece on the subject,
they found that airport equipment varied a lot. Surprisingly, that at
the present Tokyo airport (which then was quite new) was among the
worst of the many they tested. But their conclusion was that unless
you were carrying very high-speed film and would need to make multiple
passes through security there probably wasn't anything to be worried
about.

A recent post on the Usenet seemed to confirm that this conclusion
need not be revised today.
