fixing time for hie

i have a question for those of you who process your own hie. i use
kodak rapid-fix for about 4:15 and then the normal wash afterwards. after
i view the negatives, there still seems to be some emulsion that hasn't
cleared . what i was wondering was, is this the normal fog associated
with the film or should it be transparent? i am relatively new to
infrared, so any input would appreciated.
as far as exposing the film, the salesperson at my local camera store
advised me to expose at 640 and bracket around that(with filter(#25) in
place). i've found that 320 works fairly well for me. anyway, if anyone
could shed some light(infra kind, of course) on their fixing procedures and
what the negatives should look like after all said and done, i'd appreciate.
