Unfortunately, Mr. President, under U.S. law as I understand it (I'm
no more a lawyer than George is) new editions usually contain new
material that permits a new copyright, so the clock gets reset.=20

Gracias! (Again, though, I'm not sure that has much to do with U.S.
law.)

Doubtless true for most purposes. Curiously, the U.S. has
particularly lax laws where typefaces are concerned, since the U.S.
courts have ruled that a typeface is an alphabet and the alphabet is
public domain. This particular variety of intellectual property is
protected in the EC, but only the computer code that defines the
character shapes in computer fonts can be copyrighted in the U.S.

As a writer and editor, I've got to say that I rely on laws that
support the creator's rights to intellectual property. But there are
many cases, such as this one, where such laws seem arbitrary and
unrealistic.
