If I make a suggestion regarding HIE sharpness.  You did not say 
what sort of lens you are using.  If you are using a zoom lens
with lots of elements and airspaces, stop!  Because you are
at or beyond the limit within which the lens was corrected, 
poor sharpness is almost inevitable.  The best results will be
obtained by use of a slow or medium speed prime, fixed-focal
length lens.  HIE, because of halation problems is never as sharp
as it might be.  But it is capable of good sharpness.  I suggest
you look carefully at the lens you're using, if it is a zoom, 
as the most likely culprit.
