Although I color into prints, I do photocopy the print and do the first
coloring on the photocopy.  Unless you are working a lot with hand-coloring,
the colors themselves may not be what you want after you have colored a
print, so testing is very worthwhile.

Also, I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but at least with pencils, I
have found it far easier to work with matte rather than glossy paper.
