This takes a bit of experience, especially with HIE film.  With ordinary
film, look at the thinnist parts of the negative (corresponding to the
shadows).  There should be some detail visible there.  The highlights (the
dark parts of the negative) should appear dark, but not too dense.  This is
a little more difficult to judge by eye.  Once you've made a few contact
prints (unfortunately requiring some form of darkroom) correctly, you will
be able to identify good negatives.  Infrareds are more difficult, though.
