Do you have any way of reconstructing whether there's any correlation
between the shutter speed and the presence/absence of the band? I
don't know what it might mean if you could make a correlation, but it
might be a clue.
Might it have been anything external to the camera--like (though I
blush to suggest it) a camera strap falling in front of the lens? (On
those rare occasions when I abandon SLRs I have a bad habit of
including my own fingers in more frames than I'd like to admit.)
I assume from what you say that you've checked the interior of the
Leica, between lens and shutter, for any foreign object--like a bit of
thread or a pine needle, or... well, that's literally clutching at
straws. :)
