Don, you are right, the exposure and development needs experimenting.
So it might be good idea to bracket your exposures and try different
developers and developing times. Then you (maybe) can select the
combination that works best for you.

One reason why I sent my exposure/developing combinations is that
I use EI100 and George uses EI8 to EI10, so there is a big difference!
The developing time is different, George uses 5 min. in Rodinal 1+100.
