I did an outdoor engagement portrait with HIE once. Both the bride and
groom were wearing dark sweaters. When I got the photos back, one sweater
remained dark while the other turned very light. I asked the bride to look
at the garment tags, and tell me what the fabric was. One sweater was a
synthetic, while the other was wool (I don't remember which was which).
The composition of the fabric seems to make a difference. Satin, even
black, will turn white with HIE. This is often seen in the lapels of the
groom's tux in wedding photos.
