This is also why an earlier version of Kodak's infrared film had a 7 or 8
inch long black (non-film) leader at the beginning of the roll.  If I recall
correctly, after loading the film (which could be done in lighted
conditions) you had to click several extra exposures on the camera before
getting to the real beginning of the roll.  

Incidently, I still have one roll of this film in my freezer.  It's
expiration date is Sept. 1969  Its been frozen since then, so maybe it is
still good!   It had much the same spectral response as does HIE, but was
slower in speed and much finer grain.
