The world of mailinglists admittedly is confusing not only because it
can't be dealt with quite as mindlessly as regular e-mail or Usenet
messages, but partly because each mailinglist seems to have a modus
operandi that's remarkably different from every other, even though the
assumption is that all listservers work essentially the same way.  The
only solution is to save (and use) a reference copy of "the rules"
(the Administrative Posting, here) for every list you subscribe to or
may resubscribe to.

That's not to condone failure to follow the rules, of course.  If the
infractions are annoying to the list readers (and they are), they must
be downright infuriating to the lists' owners and administrators.
