This creates a mental image quite different from the one I imagined on
the basis of the earlier posts. The "flare" would therefore be along
the edges of the frame, toward the sprocket holes, no? That is, the
center third would appear darker that the edges, and the edges perhap
show greater "halo" effect than the center.

If so, I've had a similar effect. The "bleeding" of the negatives'
highlights into what should be the unexposed area of the film between
frames and toward the sprocket homes seems remarkably greater toward
the sprocket holes than it does between frames. (If you look at my
picture of the columns in Cor's Gallery, you can see this "flare"
along both edges of the vertical picture, though it already has some
of this overexposed area cropped off.) I don't know what caused it,
and I haven't noticed the effect in more recent rolls. Looking just
at the prints, you'd think the edges of the roll got light-struck
somehow, but when you examine the negatives you can see that the
excess density is generated within the picture and bleeds outward from
it. The film's edge area shows no untoward density at all.

On that picture of the columns, in which the effect was particularly
pronounced, I originally assumed that the strong light from the left
and its reflection from massed foliage at the right caused this flare.
Now I'm not so sure.
