IR and humidity

Years ago I shot a few 4x5 IR in the Yucatan, around Christmas. One shot was
towards the sun. The sun was not in the frame but just out of it. I did not
get any lens flare, i.e. any polygonal light spots, but I was pointed in the
general direction of the sun, not towards something that was reflecting the
sunlight. This exposure came out looking like a literal primordial swamp
scene. The air looked just like steam, very foggy looking (not film fog, but
atmospheric) and eerie. Is this how lens flare looks with IR?

Anyone else have any experience with shots like this?

Dwight
