I have a free booklet (approx. 30 pages, copyright 1947) sent to me by
Marshalls. It's called, "How to Make Beautiful Colored Prints with
Marshall's Photo Oil Colors." This booklet is apparently out of print, as
they sent me a photocopy. I contacted them for info on their photo oils and
pencils and this is what they sent. When I later purchased their products,
this booklet was NOT included!
It's quite interesting as it gives specific recommendations as to what
colors to use for hair, eyes and complexions in portraits (of both men and
women), as well as advice on landscapes. It also has charts giving
highlight and shadow colors, and how to mix the paints you have to produce
additional colors.
Their mailing address is: John G. Marshall Mfg. Co., P.O. Box 649,
Deerfield, IL, USA, 60015.
I have another book, "The Modern B&W Portrait (Selectively Tinted)," by
Helen Boursier, Cr.Photog., CPP. It's approx. 90 pages and is published by
Studio Press, Soulsbyville, CA, USA, 1-800-445-7160. Call for their free
catalog of books for professional photographers.
Helen's studio is located in Massachusetts, (New England), USA, and she has
made a name for herself in handcoloring. This book goes into the various
films and media, such as oils, pencils, Kodak dry dyes, etc. She has 2
pages devoted to infrared film. But mostly it's about how to market this
product to your portrait customers.
A third book, approx. 160 pages, is by Judy Martin and Annie Colbeck,
"Handtinting Photographs," published by North Light Books, Cincinnati, OH,
USA. Only about 15 pages are devoted to techniques; the rest is about the
history of handcoloring and a gallery of samples.
I found the Marshall's brochure to be the most helpful and a good reference.
But I really learned just by practice.
