Reducing flare using HIE
I just ordered 5 rolls of the new color slide IR film, HIR from Calumet today.
They are the only mail order place that I got a hold of that has this film
available. Adorama, Unique Photo, and even B&H do not have it in stock yet.
It would have ordered more, but it is $18.09 for a 36exp roll. I cant wait to
use this stuff.
On another note: Ive noticed that Im getting a lot of flare in some of my
HIE shots. Im using a Sigma 28-70 2.8-4.0D UC zoom lens with a B&W 092
(equiv. To 89B) and the hood that came with the lens. Specifically I was
shooting some landscape pictures around 4pm the other day. The sun was very
bright and behind me, the sky was very blue, and no clouds. I was using small
aperatures of f/11 to f/22. In several landscape shots that had the moon in
them, the moon created some very noticible flare. How can I reduce this flare?
It seems to me that HIE produces more flare than other B&W films, such as
such as T-Max. Is this because the longer IR wavelengths difract and bounce
around more inside the camera lens? Could my solution be as simple as getting
a better lens hood?
Beside the flare problems, the negs. looked very good I was using an E.I of
3200 and metering through the filter. This rating slightly overexposed plants,
so dialing in -0.7 EV would be appropriate if you are taking pics of plants, or
just use and E.I. of 5000 instead.
Happy Shooting,
Rolland
