The main problem I see is that you restrict yourself to current
cameras. I have an old Minolta AF-C compact from the 80's, and
although automatic, I can set film speed between 25 and 400 ASA. A
thin 2x ND filter in front of the light meter cell would create 12
ASA for a #87C filter. Such a filter is easily mounted inside the
camera, on the rear of the lens.
Not sure if focus (35mm/f2.8) would create a problem, and it also
have a data-back cut-out in the pressure plate that needs
attention/covering.
