Had exactly your experience with working out exposure for Kodak HIE
after looking around the web.
The basics are:
Use a 25 red filter
Adjust focus for IR (slightly closer)
Rate the film at ASA400
Avoid small apertures as IR light bounces around in the camera
Best times for IR light are early morning and late afternoon.
I have shot a couple of rolls and will be developing them hopefully today.
The other thing to remember is something you know already - IR will not
compensate for weak subject matter or composition. Will let you know how
my negs turn out....
