Splitting film

When I was a kid, my family lived in Biejing, China. My father shot
standard 8mm movies.
Standard 8 film is actually 16mm wide with perforations on both sides.
You put it through
the camera twice - each time exposes one side. After processing the film
is split down
the middle and spliced. The film comes in 25 foot spools.
There was no local 8mm film processing available, but the hospital where
my father
worked had a photo lab capable of processing 16mm movie film. They were
good enough
to process my father's Ektachrome, Agfachrome, or Ferraniachrome film.
Then we split
the film at home
The splitter we used was a very simple Russian device - I still have it.
It consisted of a
frame containing two steel cutting wheels, offset but just overlapping.
The film was run
between the two. It made a clean, accurate cut. You just had to feed the
film in, then
pull it through. It would be easy to make a 70mm version, but it would
need some good
quality steel, tempering facilities, and a machine shop with a precision
grinder.
I have made a drawing, scanned it, and saved it as a 7KB JPEG file. I
would include
it in this mailing but for the memory of the uproar that happened last
time someone
sent out an image in the mail.
If anyone want the drawing, just ask, and I will mail you a copy.
