I disagree that HIE is contrasty (Konica is, however).  I would suggest
that one develop their own film, as that's the only way to ensure
consistant results (okay, if you really have faith in the shop then that
might be okay).  Developing your own does not require a darkroom, and
all the materials you need can be had for under $50.  Then it's a buck
or so to do each roll.  I would say that the poster just needs to
continue with their exposure and development to find what they are
looking for.
