Intro
Hello everyone!
I recently subscribed to this list, so here's some info on me:
Name: Henning Wulff
Age: 52
Profession: Architect/Photographer/CAD consultant
Born near Hamburg, Germany, and have lived in Canada since 1952. Presently
living in Vancouver, BC. Wife with two kids, both in late maturation stages.
Photographic history:
My grandfather had a brace of Braun Paxettes with a couple of different
lenses, and my dad had a Robot, Rolleiflex and later Leicas, so I was
introduced to lots of photography early on. I started out with an Agfa 120
folder, and later got a Yashica 44LM (a great camera). Then in my late
teens I got my dad's Leicas (IIIg and Ig, with lenses from 35 to 200) and
got really serious about photography. I did portrait and wedding stuff when
I could, and took as many pictures as my finances would allow. I did some
B&W IR stuff with the old, slow (but fine grained) Kodak film. In the late
sixties I got some Konica SLR stuff, and a Speed Graphic, and as I got
better paying jobs upgraded my Leicas and got more SLR stuff. For enlarging
I had (and have) a Focomat Ic with Focotar, and a Beseler 4x5.
I studied physics for 6 years, then decided that I needed something broader
and graduated from architectural school a number of years later. Then I had
trouble finding work, so I started an architectural photography business
which continues to this day (see my web site). The combination of
architect/photographer works out well for me.
I now have a Leica M outfit with lenses from 15 to 135, a Nikon outfit with
lenses from 15 to 400, a Mamiya 6 outfit, a Hasselblad SWC, a Mamiya 645
outfit with lenses from 35 to 300, a couple of Cambo-Wide cameras with 47
and 65 lenses, a Noblex 150U, a lightweight wood field camera and a lot of
Sinar stuff and lenses from 58 to 480. In addition, I have some odd stuff
like a Konica T4 with Canon 35TS attached, a silver Rollei 35S, a Pentax
928IQ, a Pentax fisheye that I use on my Leicas and on a homemade 120 body,
etc. All in all, about 20+ cameras and 60+ lenses. I use mostly Gitzo 'pods
(7), including a mountaineer.
Preferred subjects:
Architecture/construction, landscapes, and whatever catches my eye and is
reasonably compatible with the camera/film I have with me.
Materials:
Most films and processes. Common films: 35mm - HP5, FP4, K25, Kodak Elite,
Kodak PMC and HIE. 120 - Kodak GPX, PMC, PPF, Ektar, Fuji NPS & Velvia, FP4
and Konica Infrared.
4x5 - Velvia, Fuji NPS, HP5, HIE. Why doesn't Kodak make GPX or PMC in 4x5?
My 8x10 has faded, and I sold most of my 8x10 Sinar stuff. I shot mostly
B&W and transparencies in it.
B&W gets printed mostly on RC Ilford paper, with some fiber based stuff.
Color neg stuff gets printed mostly by a local lab, as does E-6. I do some
Ilfochrome, but I also know an exceptional Ilfochrome printer who can do a
lot better job than I can, so the good stuff goes to him. A lot of stuff
gets scanned now. I don't have a slide/neg scanner myself, other than
flatbed with transparency adapter. Photo-CD, both regular and pro, is what
most gets scanned onto, and drum scans are ordered if the client has the
budget.
Other photo interests: panoramic - I love my Noblex (it is the second one;
I upgraded from the 150s) and I've had Widelux cameras since the 60's. I
also shoot 6x12 with my Cambo's. 360 photography does not interest me too
much at the moment; besides, i don't have the job prospects to pay for for
a Roundshot at the moment. All my photo equipment (except the Leica's and
the Rollei 35S) have to earn their keep. I do a lot of aerial photography
(mostly with my Mamiya 645).
Other non-photo interests:
Travel, cars & car racing, computers (mostly Mac, some PC, music, digital
imaging, skiing, hiking,......
How I found out about this list:
>From the Photoforum link, and from some discussions with Willem-Jan on
other topics.
Expanding on a photographic topic:
I have made satisfying images with all sorts of equipment, and there is no
'best' in any sense other than vary narrow instances. My 35/1.4 asph. Leica
lens is outstanding, but I have made very satisfying images with my Nikkor
35/1.4 and with the old 35/1.4 Leica-M lens. The new 47/5.6 SA-XL lens is
fantastic, but the old 47/5.6 has produced thousands of satisfying (and
saleable) images. I like talking about technical minutae, and when such
technical items are presented in a garbled or blatantly incorrect form, I
jump in, but that is almost a separate aspect of photography. I don't
collect. Stuff that doesn't get used gets shipped out.
Mostly, I want to know the technical aspects so that I can make an informed
decision about what camera, lens and film to use for a specific type of
image when sent out on a job. When I take pictures for myself, I take
whatever I'm in the mood for. If I'm hiking, that might be the wood 4x5
with 4 lenses and some Graphmatic holders filled with Velvia, or a Nikon or
two with an 18, 24-120, 200 micro and 400/5.6. If I'm walking around the
city, an M6 with 21, 35 and 90 often come along, and if I'm on a trip with
a car, a lot of stuff might come along.
