Intro
Hello. Since I've just subscribed, I thought I'd drop a
line to introduce myself.
My name is Dave Castelli and I've been enjoying
photography for 15 years. I bought my first camera as
a newlywed aiming to preserve memories on slides.
Soon found out that I really enjoyed artful shots and
joined a camera club. It was there that I was
introduced to infrared B&W...and I do love the silver
image.
My darkroom centers around B&W and incorporates a
single Beseler 23CII-XL condenser head enlarger with
a Nikkor 50mm lens. I shoot 35mm primarily through
Nikon FM's.
Infrared subjects to date have included the usual: old
buildings, gazebos against foliage, beach and sky,
cemeteries, children at play, etc.
Only one minor problem persists in my efforts--thin
negatives. I haven't pinned the cause down yet. It
might be underdevelopment or underexposure.
I'm developing in Rodinal though I've used Dektol in the
past. I usually shoot Kodak Infrared rated at ISO 200
through a Wratten 25 red filter. Of couse, I bracket at
least one stop over and under.
Prints are made on Ilford RCIII developed in Dektol.
As an aside, I am interested in old cameras and have
a few that I do use to shoot when the mood strikes.
My favorite is a 1933 Lieca III. Most of the others are
much less collectable yard sale specials.
If I had a chance (read money) to shoot off into
another direction with the darkroom, I'd like to do
some 6x9 format stuff.
I, also, like the old class of photographers: Dorothea
Lange, Bill Brandt, G. Winogrand, Edward Weston,
etc. Favorite modern photographers include Jerry
Uelsemann and Scot Mutter.
Well, that's enough for starters.
Later,
Dave
