The problem with having a lab develop your film is that you probably
haven't a clue as to how they developed it.  Also, they haven't a clue
as to how you shot it.  A half hour of work developing your own film
will clear this up.

HIE is grainy when compared to other films, but the degree is the
question.  Xtol developer will yield nice negatives, Rodinal very grainy
ones.  The way you shoot also will determine this, as shooting at a slow
speed (EI 50) will give you high grain and medium speed (EI 250) will
tame the grain somewhat.
