HIE Devs - Perceptol ?
I have recently tried using HIE in my camera, now that I have a body
with no IR film advance. The problem I have though is the size of the
grain ! !
I usually use HSI in a 5x4 camera and have no noticeable grain
on a 10x12 print, but a 5x7 print from 35mm the grain appears far to
obtrusive for my tastes.
I was wondering what developers people use to limit these golf
balls, or should I say beach balls :-)
I rated the film at 800-1600 asa in the camera and am currently just using a
Cokin P003 (red) filter. This is then developed in D-19
for 6mins at 20c.
I suspect that the D-19 is a factor (as well as the reproduction ratio)
so I wondered what other developers I could try. While I was at college I
used D-76 and got smaller grain but I am not a great fan
of this dev as I find a general loss in the shadow detail.
I was thinking about trying Ilford Perceptol (diluted) as this used to
give me medium format quality from a 35mm but I have little idea
were to start at with regards to dev times.
Has anyone on this list tried perceptol or any other fine grain
developers to try to loose some grain size or should I just go back
to D-76 or give HC-110 a try but will they reduce my grain?
Please help as I dont know if my back can holdout with the studio
5x4 for much longer.....
