The Linhof Rollex backs came in a number of varieties, The Rollex
models are knob-advanced, and came in 6x6, 6x7, and 6x9. Super Rollex
backs, made later, have lever advances. My 1958 "linhof Practce" book
shows both Rollex and Super Rollex models. But it shows no Rollex for
70mm film and makes no reference to the existence of a knob-wound 70mm
back. Regarding the 4x5 backplate, there was, indeed, a model for the
various Linhof (and other) standard 6x9 Graflok backs. Doubtless, the actual
back hardware, lsans mounting plate, is used on all formats, if only to
save the coist oftooling for a low-production and very complex gadget.
I do not see why it should not be possible, though, to adapt this back to,
say, a Mamiya RB67 or a 6x8 Fujica with the help of Mamiya or Fujica junk
parts, a willing precision machinist, and a transfusion of money!
BTW, I have 6x6 and 6x9 standard Rollex backs. They are excellent for film
flatness and the spacing between frames is very even. Since a few years ago,
when I "stole" a virtually unused 6x9 Rollex and started using it, I wouldn't
touch a 6x9 Graflex-type rollholder again, even though the Linhof unit requires
removal of the groundglass back for insertion. There very seldom is an
occasion when one can call a piece of photographic equipment "the very best".
I will not do that for my Technika, much as I love to use it, but I will
say it for the Rollex series of backs, which are built like trucks and
work beautifully.
Hope this helps,
Ed Lukacs
