I corresponded with the manufacturer a while back and they confirmed that
it is a cover over a xenon flashtube. To me, it makes more sense to use an
87C over whatever you've got. I think something like a Rosco dark red
filter, maybe doubled up, would be pretty subtle in many circumstances,
like a dark bar.
Maybe it's from suffering through the retail end of photography, but just
the thought of those system flashes with modules, adapters, alternate
batteries, and synch cords gives me a headache. It seems like there was
always one part that had to be backordered.
