Sunpak IR head: I've been thinking of buying one of these, also.

This is a very good point and in general I'm inclined to agree with you
(I make my own cameras and optics sometimes and rarely buy anything
except for "work") but I happen to already have a 622. It's a truly
great flash. There are not lots of flash units that allow bare tube
operation. It does. That's why I have it. However, finding it at
Goodwill for $50 certainly didn't hurt. So I am considering getting the
IR head for it since I already have pretty much everything else I would
need.

Using the accessory battery, the thing recycles to full power in about 1
second and is good for a couple hundred pops. I suppose that what you
are going to use it for would determine whether you needed one. I use
mine a lot. It replaced the old 200B the minute I got it working. It is
not quite as powerful, but very nearly. Close enough.

If I had to go out and buy one, I probably wouldn't unless I had a good
reason because they are extremely expensive; the basic unit with standard
head and just the pod that takes 4 alkaline C cells lists for about $500.
You can get it for a couple hundred less. I've enquired after the IR
head. Locally, I could pay $70 for it but can get it for $40 mail order.
It is quite true that if you start adding parts to the thing you could
easily have a thousand dollar flash.

I have not yet seen one of these heads. Presumably, there is no
automatic control with the thing using IR. Does anyone know what kind of
guide number might apply with HIE?
