Nobody ever said mounting the filter either just in front of the film between
the focal plane rails or in front of the shutter frame was easy. In fact it is
darn difficult. But it is not impossible. I just mounted one, in fact, in front
of the metal focal frame (behind the shutter ... within the shutter housing!)
and the camera (an A1 Canon) seems none the worse for wear and is still
operating well. Sure, I took a risk that the filter would be crushed or the
shutter interfered with or whatever ... but I decided to take the risk and so
far all's ok. OTOH, I do have a few backup cameras.

As Willem says the major problem is the shutter all of a suden closing up on
you while you are working with the shutter open and thus a fully mechanical B
setting is quite preferable.
