Dex,
I have run into this problem on a few occasions where I have been "into the
sun" with the lens shaded. You have not indicated the format that this
occurred on but I suspect that as you close down the aperture the "angle"
gets wider by a few degrees and while it did not show up when you were
composing (ie it was not to be seen with the lens wide open) you have an
internal reflection of the iris/shutter "showing up " on the negative due
to the increased angle of acceptance at higher f-stop.

I will admit that I cannot see how it would not show up on the Tmax but I
imagine that the sensitivity of the HIE to this problem may well be greater
with this lighting situation.

This may well be properly cured by the use of a compendium lens shade.
