Contrast, etc.

I am an amateur photographer and am quite new to infrared.  I have taken
about 10 rolls of Kodak HIE, but all of them have low contrast and most of
them (the negs) are too dark...  What can I do to remedy this in the actual
picture taking and in the developing?
