Exposure with 87 Filter -Reply

I've always been told to forget trying to meter with a conventional light
meter of any kind when shooting HIE. Consequently, I shoot at 1/60 of a
second shutter speed @ f/16 when using a #25 and 1/30 @ f/16 with a
#87. Maybe a bracket of 1 stop darker to give me a thinner negative, but
rarely do I try one stop lighter. That usually just gives me an overexposed
frame. These parameters work best in bright sunny situations, whether
I'm out in the direct sunlight with the sun behind me or in the shade of a
tree limb trying to avoid lens flare with the sun in front of me. Most other
lighting conditions severly compromise the abilities of HIE anyway. I've
tried to compensate for low-light situations or under light cloud cover by
opening up a stop, but sometimes that doesn't work with HIE the way it
does with conventional films and I wind up "roasting" the frame with
overexposure. The above parameters are also with a polarizer on the
lens. Typically, a polarizer kills 1-2 stops, but with HIE, I'd say 1 stop max.
and in a lot of situations, taking the polarizer off does not give me any film
speed back at all. About the only effect I see a polarizer producing with
HIE is to kill shadow detail even further, which is not something I need to
have happen in most situations.
Well, enough rambling......

I am sure this has been asked before, but I cant seem to find the
posting. I recently purchased an 87 filter for my nikon for use with
Kodak HIE. I will be traveling next week and would like to try it out,
but don't have any idea what type of exposure to use. I will be
metering without the filter on(obviously)...probably through another
camera.

Thanks for your help
