Intro and ?'s on scanning

Hi all,
I subscribed to this list a short time back and have been quite content to
lurk. However, I just received my first roll of HIE back and have a few
questions. First, the bio:
- - Name: Rory Swensen
- - Profession/Study: Webmaster for ARUP Laboratories (www.arup-lab.com)
- - Country: USA
- - Personal history of photography: Considerable experience with B&W years
ago, including dark room. I have recently returned to photography after a
five year hiatus.
- - preferred subjects: Landscapes, architecture, and my kids.
- - materials (film, filters, paper, chemistry): Mostly Fuji SuperG 400 or
800, Kodak 200 and T-Max, experimenting with HIE.
- - format (35mm/medium format/large format): 35mm
- - How did you find out about this list: Stumbled across it while on a
separate photography list.
Okay, now the questions.
I just received the prints back from my first roll of HIE. Thanks to the
resources on the internet, several of the photos are of sufficient quality
to frame! (I am pretty darn proud of this, considering I was guessing the
entire time)
However, when I scan these images in to the computer, I lose a _tremendous_
amount of detail. It seems that the scanner cannot pick up the subtle
variations in the print. I see the photos on the gallery and they look so
much better than what I can achieve, despite the fact that the print itself
is comparable. What methods do you use to digitize your prints? Have you
learned any secrets that you might pass along? This is the first time I
have experienced this type of problem, as both normal B&W and color photos
come out fine.
The details:
Scanner - HP ScanJet 3C flatbed
Software - Photoshop 4.0
Scanned in at a sharp B&W photo, saved to a tif file.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Rory
