Another Webmaster!  I run the home page for my photography association,
PPANJ (Prof. Photographers Assn. of NJ).  Actually my title is PPANJ Home
Page Committee Chairperson, and it's a volunteer position.  But I've learned
a lot.

As far as scanning goes, the prints I submitted to the IR Gallery were
scanned by someone else.  But since then I've acquired a scanner (won a
StudioScan IIsi free from Agfa's home page) and taken a course in Photoshop,
so I do my own now.  In fact, I recently posted a Gallery to our web site;
just go to www.cmpsolv.com/ppanj and follow the link to the Gallery.

Can you play around with the Gamma settings on your scanner software?  Mine
allows me to choose a setting; 1.8 is a good starting point.  Raise or lower
this and you will get a lighter or darker overall scan.  I usually scan at a
rather high (300 dpi) setting, then resize the image and reset the
resolution to about 100 dpi in Photoshop.

You can also adjust the highlights and shadows independently in Photoshop.
Along the top toolbar, select Image > Adjust > Curves.  Play with it and
you'll see.  I was taught that this method is used on b&w photos, while
Image > Adjust > Levels is used for color photos.

Be sure you put a prominent copyright in your images!  If you visit PPANJ's
Gallery, you'll see the copyright notice I put on those photos.  It's
distracting, yes, but that's precisely what makes the image less attractive
to thieves.  One of our members had an image and text stolen off his home
page by an online wedding mall, who then used them to make up a home page
for another studio!  And a photographer in NH just told me her entire
wedding site (images, text and even layout) were stolen and used to create a
bogus page for a fictitious photographer somewhere else.  So PLEASE identify
your images!

You should also visit Digimarc (www.digimarc.com) for info on their digital
watermark and tracking technology.  If you are a legal, registered owner of
Photoshop 4, you can get a free 3-month trial of your own personal watermark
creator ID with tracking.  They have a paid tracking service ($99 per year
for an individual) and a free creator ID if you don't need the tracking service.

symbol, within Photoshop, I can give you step-by-step directions.
