Mary, George, et al.:
The old Ppd fine grain developers are a gross pain to deal with but the
quality of the image is somewhat like Rodinal in that the grain is very
sharp and clean but also much smaller. Quite intense, and very beautiful,
IMHO. So it may satisfy George's objection, as well as providing the
quality Mary appreciates. Of course, whether it would satisfy your
eye is another matter. And whether you'd want to fool with mixing it up
is another matter as well.
I used to use 2475 with Rodinal to provide self-screening for metal
intaglio and silk screen prints, making enlarged lith transparencies
direct from the 35mm negatives. It worked really well, but the quality of
the image was fairly rocky. Sometimes that was just what was needed;
sometimes not. I abandoned the Rodinal with 2475 early on for the reason
George mentions, and since HIE is so similar to the 2475 in all respects
but spectral sensitivity (this is my opinion. 2475 is an extended red
film.) I've never bothered to test it.
If you like the quality of grain in Rodinal, you might enjoy Beutler's
formula. It is similar to Rodinal, but the acutance may be even sharper.
If you've ever had the treat of seeing (longtime Seattle photographer and
Sunset Magazine Freelancer) Don Normark's prints (no infrared that I know
of though) it is his normal developer. What Wonderful Grit!
