Although I no longer photograph weddings, I was one of very few
photographers in my area using infrared film for this purpose. In fact, it
was Joe Paduano who encouraged me along these lines. One bride said her
favorite image was an infrared one, because it perfectly represented the
dreamlike memory of her wedding day.

I used infrared film this summer for a First Communion portrait of a
friend's daughter. The mother liked the infrared images better than the
traditional color ones! I told her that I felt the infrared images were
more like fine art than like photographs. I also feel the mystical nature
of the sacraments of marriage and communion are best captured on infrared
film. (In case you're wondering, I'm not Catholic.) Has anyone else used
infrared film for this type of portrait?

I just started something new called Angel Portraits. In the professional
magazines I've seen other photographers doing this, but not one was using
infrared. Of course, that's the first thing that came to my mind! I did my
first session with a long-time client recently, and luckily it was warm
enough to do outdoor photos. The mother loved the color and b&w studio
portraits, but I haven't finished the roll of infrared yet. I'm looking
forward to seeing how they turn out. Who knows, the angel might just look
real :-)

If anyone is interested in Angel Portraits, a little net searching led me to
the actual manufacturer of the wings. They will sell directly to
photographers with a minimum order, and their prices are 50-66% less than
the photo supply house that's known for this merchandise.

At the PhotoPlus show in New York City next week, Jill Enfield is speaking
on infrared and hand coloring. For further info, call 1-800-243-3238.
