Seeing this, I went and tried to look at what I might have. It's kind of
hard to do because we are in a big transition now and the books are in
piles.
One of my favorite references is the great _Photographic Facts and
Formulas_ by Wall and Jordan, originally published way back in the
twenties, if not the teens, by the American Photographic Publishing
Company. Of this, I have several copies (I will not be without it) in a
number of editions, the 1941, 47 and the last, edited by John S. Carroll,
which was published in 1975. The imprint is signed "Amphoto".
Other authors include Feininger and Picker (neither of whom I've really
been excited about). Titles are a mixed bag. Lots, as you say, of well,
maybe practical stuff.
All of this is history, though. I'm sure I don't have a single recent
book from them. However, they at least have on their record one real
winner. So why have they not continued in line with that superb
precedent? To me, that is a question that might be appropriate to ask.
