Vidicons

Somebody mentioned vidicons and IR. I doubt if the broadcasters are still
using them ... they smear too much! (As do the cameras.) I used vidicons
when I was in student TV in London and the image quality is very poor.

Ironically, Vidicons were used on the Voyager probes with Blue, Green and
Orange filters (not red) since the red response of the vidicon is, I'm
told, rather poor. So I guess the infrared is even worse. The photons
don't have enough energy. All those images from Jupiter and elsewhere were
not true RGB images, and even the colours that came back were tweaked by
the NASA publicity department to make them more exciting.

OK ... another question. Is there a searchable archive of this group? I
get asked questions and often run off to my own archive to find answers and
suggestions. It would be better to refer the questioners to a proper
archive as well as the group itself. It might cut down on all those
endless questions about using TMAX.

Cheers

Andy
