Most infra red remote cotrolls transmit in very short pulses of a few thousandths of
a second. The emiting diode may produce better results if powered from dc with a
current limiting resistor. Some manufacturers produce infra red emiting diodes of
shorter wavelength. eg 800nm. Try looking at some electronic component
catalouges.
