My opinion is that to start out you should keep everything as simple as possible.
The F11 1/125 sec works out to EI 250, so set your camera accordingly, put the filter
over your lens, and meter TTF (through the filter). Bracket one stop either way.
That's about it. You'll quickly find out what works and what doesn't for what you're
trying to accomplish.
Zoom lenses work just fine, so give it a try.
